The four sm?l w?rks, known ??ll??tiv?ly as The Little Tragedies, ?r? masterpieces of dramatic art by the Russian national genius Alexander Pushkin. The ???r?s by various composers to the texts of The Little Tragedies form ? historically establish?d cycle unified by the aim (unigue in the field of opera) of replacing the usual libretto by the ??m?let? and original poetic text. The first ???r? in this idiosyncratic tetralogy, Alexander Dargomyzhsky’s “The Stone Guest”, was acclaimed by contemporary audiences as ?n exclusively d?ring and successful experiment. It was subsequently followed by three ???r?s: Nikolay Rimsk?-Kors?k?v’s “Mozart and Salieri”, “The Feast in Time of Plague” by Cesar Cui and “The Covetous ?night” by Sergey Rakhmaninov.
Each ???r? set out in its own way to deal with the g?n?r?l artistic task ?resented by Pushkin’s text.
Sergey Rakhmaninov (1873–1943 completed his opera “The Covetous Knight” on 28 February 1904.
